The lowcountry is known for its unique cuisine, thanks to the Gullah way of cooking. These methods were passed down to the Brown family from an old family friend. "Mose" shared with Bennett Brown, Jr. and his Aunt Virginia the fine art of roasting meats and basting with vinegar. Today this is the foundation for our famous ‘Carolina style barbecue, and it is these exceptional flavors that make our company truly stand out.

historic lowcountry recipeMose’s recipes originated in West Africa over 300 years ago, and they have remained synonymous with the lowcountry ever since. Over the years, Bennett Brown, Jr. and Aunt Virginia cooked together and perfected Mose’s secret techniques. Then one summer, Bennett and his wife Mary Alice held a party to celebrate the end of summer. They wanted to show their Atlanta friends a real taste of Carolina cuisine, so they pit cooked a whole pig and showcased it with all of their homemade sides. The lucky guests enjoyed the food so much that the event became the "must attend" annual get together at the Brown’s home.

Bennett By 1986, the entrepreneurial spirit hit their son, Bennett A. Brown III, and he turned this family tradition into a full-blown barbecue company. It wasn’t long before Atlanta fell in love with their hand pulled barbecued meats and the unparalleled homemade sides. Soon LowCountry was serving crowds of up to 2500 people.

In 1988 LowCountry Barbecue catered the National Democratic Convention, and in 1996, served crowds during the Olympic Summer Games. Even Julia Child herself has enjoyed our famous ‘cue, staying at an event until the pork was completely gone. Today LowCountry is the official catering service for the Atlanta Steeplechase, where we get to share our southern hospitality with the world. Uncle Jim
