Our History & Photo Gallery

The lowcountry is known for its unique cuisine, thanks to the Gullah way of cooking. These methods were passed down to the Brown family from an old family friend, “Mose.” “Mose” shared with Bennett Brown’s father and his Aunt Virginia what is now our 70-year-old vinegar sauce recipe. Today, this is the foundation for our famous ‘Carolina style barbecue, and its exceptional flavors that make our product truly stand out.

“Mose” recipes originated in West Africa over 300 years ago, and they have remained synonymous with the lowcountry ever since. Over the years, Brown’s father and Aunt Virginia cooked together and perfected “Mose’s” secret recipes and techniques. Then, one summer, Brown’s father and mother, held a party to celebrate the end of summer. They wanted to show their Atlanta friends the real taste of ‘Carolina lowcountry cuisine. So, they pit cooked a whole pig and served it along side homemade southern sides. The lucky guests enjoyed the food so much that the event became the “must attend” event of the summer at the Brown’s home.

Bennett

By 1976, Brown had caught the barbecue bug and started cooking pigs for small gatherings. In 1986, with his entrepreneurial spirit and desire to feed Atlanta the best of what the lowcountry has to offer, Brown turned family recipes and traditions into a full-blown barbecue company. It wasn’t long before Atlanta fell in love with our hand-pulled barbecued meats and unparalleled homemade sides. Soon LowCountry was serving crowds of up to 2500.

Since 1986, LowCountry Barbecue has catered the National Democratic Convention, and served crowds during the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Even Julia Child herself has enjoyed our famous ‘cue, staying at an event until the pork was completely gone. Today, we’re the official caterer for the Atlanta Steeplechase, Georgia’s best lawn party, which every year draws thousands. We provide guests with either full service catering, or picnic packs filled with our hand-pulled meats and homemade southern sides.
